Who I am, and why you might want me to be your coach...
I've been around. Though I now live in the Pacific Northwest, I grew up in New England, and have lived in California. I've been in 48 states, and have crossed the country many times, by plane, train, car and even bicycle. I've worked on a cattle ranch, at a children's museum, a magazine, and a couple of the most successful Internet businesses. I've learned how to be successful in a wild variety of environments.
I've dealt with loss, and crisis. My mother died during my first year of college. Later, in my early 20's, I developed an aggressive cancer, and spent three years fighting it with radiation and chemotherapy. Now, years later, I live with late-onset side-effects of those treatments, including congestive heart failure. In 2004, I underwent surgery to remove another cancerous tumor, this one most likely caused by my earlier treatment. After all that, I've gained a lot of perspectives and insights.
Along the way, I've learned how to listen. Not just to people, but the world around me. I'm open to the hidden messages and joys of life, including working with people. I listen with curiosity, suspend judgement, and ask the right questions.
I've got training. I've trained at the Academy for Coach Training, an
ICF-accredited school for coaches. ICF accreditation is your way of knowing that I'm not just making it up as I go along - I'm using techniques and processes that are known to provide results. More importantly, you can depend upon a level of professionalism regarding confidentiality and business ethics. I'm certified as a professional coach.
I'm an interesting and funny guy. Who else do you know who knows how to milk a cow, repair a bicycle, organize a fundraising campaign, manage a major software release, and perform English folk dance? My wide range of interests and experiences help me to bring unusual perspectives, insights, intuition and humor to our working relationship.
Thanks for getting to know me better, and your interest in coaching. I hope you'll contact me so that we can work together.
