Are you trying to cope with a chronic health problem?Would you like some help to live a happier and healthier life? No matter what the specific illness, living with a chronic condition brings a distinctive set of challenges. As a person living with several chronic conditions myself, I'm familiar with these challenges. It's my job as a coach to help you work with them. My goal is to help you live your own version of the Good Life! I live with congestive heart failure, swallowing problems and other conditions resulting from treatments I've had for cancer. I'm a two-time cancer survivor, but that triumph has brought with it daily awareness of medications, physical and dietary limitations, fatigue, pain and uncertainty. While you, or someone you know, may have a different diagnosis, those ongoing challenges are probably quite familiar. Studies have shown that, while specific diseases have their own issues, many of the challenges faced by people with chronic illness are the same.
I work with people on many different aspects of their conditions: - Perhaps you've just be diagnosed and are feeling overwhelmed. I've been there. I can help you find your way, learn what you need to know and chart the path you want to follow from here.
- You may be finding that, because of your condition, you will have to change your life in big ways, perhaps a new career, or a new place to live. I'm able to help you work through those decisions, and figure out the solution that works for you.
- If you've had your condition for some time, you may be struggling emotionally with the ongoing day-to-day process of managing your condition. I can help you find ways to cope with the up-and-downs that all of us go through, and support you as you keep moving forward.
- Maybe you are having trouble fitting your self-care needs (meds, tests, rest, doctors, etc.) into your life. I can help you get clarity on what it will take to be your best and work with you to devise strategies for making sure you get it.
- Do you find it difficult to handle an array of specialists and healthcare professionals involved in your treatment? I can help you to successfully manage your healthcare team, improve communication, and, by being an active patient, get the care that will be best for YOU.
I bring a unique set of skills to my work. First, I'm a coach, trained at a school accredited by the International Coach Federation. That means I've learned a set of specific skills and techniques intended to help my clients deepen their own understanding of their situations, and take action to change and improve their lives. That foundation of coaching technique is illuminated by my own personal experience with illnesses both acute and chronic. I have perspectives, knowledge and familiarity with the things my clients are facing. Plus, as a patient myself, I've been trained in self-care management techniques that have been proven to help people with chronic conditions feel better physically and emotionally.
If that sounds interesting, I'd love to talk with you, at no charge and with no obligation. I offer a free preliminary conversation and consultation, where we can answer your questions about my coaching, and I can learn more about your specific situation. This gives each of us a chance to "test the fit", and gives you a taste of what the coaching relationship might be like. These conversations last about 30 minutes.
If after that session, you want to move forward, we'll schedule a longer intake session, followed by weekly telephone sessions, with email support.
Check the Services page for more information about how my coaching works.
